The first step is always a phone call. When you reach our office with an urgent concern, we gather information about what’s happening so we can prepare before you arrive. That means less time explaining from scratch when you walk in and more time focused on helping you feel comfortable and get assessed quickly.

Once you’re in the chair, we take a close look at what’s going on using digital X-rays and, when needed, a more detailed scan to understand the full scope of the problem. Dr. Michael M. Bohn evaluates the situation and walks you through the findings before any treatment begins. You’ll know what’s happening, what we recommend, and why, so you can make an informed decision even when you’re stressed and in pain.

Pain that intense and sudden usually signals something happening beneath the surface, whether that’s an infection, a cracked root, or decay that’s reached the nerve. We diagnose the source and address it directly rather than masking the pain without understanding the cause.

Time is critical here. If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to keep it moist, either by placing it back in the socket or keeping it in milk. Get to us as quickly as possible. The sooner we can work with the tooth, the better the chances of saving it.

A cracked tooth can range from a minor chip to a fracture that extends into the root. We assess the severity and determine the appropriate response, which might be bonding, a crown, or in more serious cases, extraction followed by a replacement plan.

An abscess is an infection, and infections don’t resolve on their own. Left untreated, they can spread beyond the tooth and become a serious health concern. If you notice swelling, a pimple-like bump on your gum, or persistent throbbing pain alongside a fever, don’t wait.

We use Bufferpro and Onset buffered anesthetic to make numbing faster and more comfortable. Traditional anesthetics can sting on injection and take several minutes to fully kick in. The buffering process reduces both of those issues, which matters when you’re already in pain and on edge. Getting you comfortable quickly is the first priority, and we work with that in mind from the moment you sit down.

What if my emergency happens outside of office hours?

Call our office number. Our voicemail provides guidance on next steps for after-hours situations. For severe swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding, go to your nearest emergency room.

Will my insurance cover an emergency dental visit?

Many dental plans include some coverage for emergency exams and treatment. We recommend calling your provider ahead of your visit if possible, though we understand that’s not always realistic in an urgent situation. Our team can help sort through the details afterward.

Can I come in if I’m not an existing patient?

Yes. We see patients in urgent need regardless of whether they’ve been to our office before.

How do I know if I need an extraction or if the tooth can be saved?

That depends on the extent of the damage and the health of the surrounding structures. We don’t recommend extraction unless it’s genuinely the best option. Saving a natural tooth is always preferred when feasible.

What should I do for pain before I can get to the office?

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort in the short term. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum tissue, as this can cause irritation. A cold compress applied to the outside of the face can help reduce swelling.
